Wellander Naomie Cesar, originally from Haiti, was glued to her phone last week, waiting for updates from her family and daughter’s family, still living in the hurricane ravaged country.
“The whole night I did not sleep. The whole night I stayed up, you know checking where they were because at two o’clock in the morning it was going to hit Haiti,” Cesar said.
When 2 a.m., on Wednesday came around Cesar called her daughter’s aunt Gina vital who lives in Port-A-Piment which is in southern Haiti for an update. Cesar said the winds were strong and the ocean had risen quite a bit in a few hours.
Naomie Cesar, owner of Welland store CaribAfrica, is determined to give back to her fellow Haitians after Hurricane Matthew devastated part of the island causing hundreds of deaths. Thursday October 6, 2016 in Welland, Ont. Michelle Allenberg/Welland Tribune/Postmedia Network
